Washington, D.C. — Monday morning’s predawn federal raid on Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home, three weeks before the midterms, is an abuse of power, RepresentUs said today. Combined with the Justice Department’s recent move to investigate the media companies that stood up to the administration’s effort to bar some from the White House, it shows a dangerous escalation of the administration’s campaign to censor and intimidate those who get in its way.
No president should use the power of the federal government to threaten or intimidate its perceived opponents or silence its critics.
“The main message we see the administration sending, over and over, is the same: if you stand up to it, you will be punished. It’s the mafia playbook in action, and its target is not just those being investigated, but everyone else it wants to intimidate ahead of the elections.” said RepresentUs CEO Maria McFarland Sánchez-Moreno. “But we’ve seen this before and we know how to counter it, by standing firm, exercising our rights to vote and speak, and demanding that Congress ensure accountability for abuse of power and corruption.”
RepresentUs is the nation’s largest nonpartisan organization dedicated to building a movement that makes government truly accountable to the American people. We unite people from all backgrounds to defend democracy, root out corruption, mobilize action, and support campaigns at every level to build a political system that truly serves the public.
