WASHINGTON – The U.S. Supreme Court threw out Wisconsin’s state legislative maps in an unsigned decision Wednesday, ruling that the Wisconsin Supreme Court violated the Voting Rights Act when selecting them. The Court left the congressional map intact.
According to the Redistricting Report Card, which grades voting maps on partisan fairness, competitiveness, and geographic features, Wisconsin’s state legislative maps both got “A’s” while the congressional map received an “F".
RepresentUs Wisconsin State Director Amanda Pustz issued the following statement in response:
“It's frustrating to see the Supreme Court validate Wisconsin politicians’ attempts to establish the most extreme partisan gerrymander for state voting maps, especially after refusing to consider Voting Rights Act concerns in Alabama for this election cycle.
“Gerrymandering isn’t the only threat to Wisconsin's elections. Authoritarians in the state legislature have consistently been attacking free, fair, and secure elections, including by carrying out a campaign to disband Wisconsin's Bipartisan Elections Commission. To counter these threats, RepresentUs is building a movement of people across the political spectrum to protect Wisconsin’s elections and fight for districts that truly represent the people."
