Right now, lawmakers and their families have the freedom to trade stocks and invest millions of dollars into the industries they’re supposed to be regulating. This is the epitome of political corruption — and it needs to stop.
The TRUST Act (H.R. 336) is the solution we need to fix this fatal flaw in our democracy. This bipartisan bill would force elected officials in Congress to put their stocks in a blind trust — a system which guarantees they can't abuse their positions and use insider information to line their own pockets.
You can't be trusted to regulate industries if you have a personal financial stake in their success or failure. Until lawmakers put their stocks in a blind trust, our representatives will choose their own interests over the needs of their constituents.
