The Problem:

Gerrymandering is when voting district lines are drawn in a way that artificially advantages one person, party, or group over another.  It allows entrenched politicians and political parties to draw their own districts, often in secret and without any public oversight.

The result? Election results are effectively decided before any voting begins  — and you, the American voter, have no real ability to influence your politician or have your voice heard.  This isn’t a Republican or Democrat problem - both parties gerrymander districts in order to stay in power.

Voting districts will be redrawn for the next 10 years in September 2021 — making it absolutely essential that we act now to prevent districts from being gerrymandered for a decade.

This is how politicians carve up voting districts to guarantee their own re-election. Each square block represents voters in a particular district.

The Solution:

The For the People Act would ban partisan gerrymandering and ensure that voters of all parties have their voices heard by our elected officials. The For the People Act would change the way we draw our maps by:

  • Creating fair, uniform rules for drawing voting districts for United States Congress
  • Banning partisan gerrymandering by making illegal any map that gives an advantage to one political party over the other
  • Requiring states to use independent commissions to draw district maps
  • Giving the public the opportunity to weigh in on the process through transparent, public hearings
  • Transferring power from politicians to voters

The For the People Act has passed the House of Representatives and is awaiting a vote in the U.S. Senate. This one may come down to the wire. Your Senators will only support this bill if they believe the majority of their constituents support it as well. Will you send a message to your Senators now asking them to pass the For the People Act and save our country from another 10 years of gerrymandering?
