The Problem:
Dark money is secret political spending that doesn’t have to be reported to the public. Special interests, billionaires, and corporations exploit loopholes to funnel millions of dark money into elections, without having to disclose ANY information about where the money came from.
Dark money groups have spent more than $1 BILLION on federal elections since 2010. Just this past year, dark money groups spent at least $100 million— and that figure is likely underreported by over 600%! Voters deserve to know where massive campaign funds are coming from, who is trying to influence their vote, and why.
Dark money spending has skyrocketed since the landmark Citizens United Supreme Court decision unleashed unlimited political spending in 2010.
The Solution:
The For the People Act would close major loopholes that make dark money possible, and make it harder for foreign entities to influence our elections. The Act would:
- Require any organization, corporation, or union that spends more than $10,000 in an election cycle to report all donors who gave $10,000 and report all campaign-related spending above $1,000
- Require major online platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Google to maintain a public database of all political ads, including who paid for them, how much they paid, and the target audience
- Close loopholes that allow overseas companies and individuals to donate to political campaigns and candidates
- Require the Federal Election Commission to conduct an audit of illicit foreign spending in U.S. elections, and whether it impacted voter turnout among specific communities
The For the People Act has passed the House of Representatives and is awaiting a full vote in the U.S. Senate. This one may come down to the wire. Your Senators will only support this bill if they believe the majority of their constituents support it as well.
