WASHINGTON, DC (November 14, 2019)

RepresentUs won a Shorty Social Good Award for the viral video Unbreaking America: Solving the Corruption Crisis.

The Shorty Social Good Awards honor the social good initiatives, brands, agencies & nonprofits are fighting to make our world a better place. While the Shorty Awards have long-honored the best of social media, this competition includes efforts made by organizations to improve sustainability and diversity internally, foster globally-minded business partnerships, and increase employee, community, and civic engagement.

Winners were selected by members of the Real Time Academy of Short Form Arts & Sciences, comprised of luminaries from advertising, media, entertainment and technology.

ABOUT REPRESENTUS

Since 2012, RepresentUs—the nation’s largest right-left anti-corruption organization—has been working to unrig the broken political system that has placed power and influence into the hands of special interests instead of the people. Laws are no longer determined by civil discourse, evidence-based policymaking, or the will of the people. Instead, they’re written by and for special-interest groups, partisan gamesmanship, and big spenders. Through voter-driven initiatives at the state and local level, RepresentUs and its community have gone around an ineffective and gridlocked Congress to pass legislation that stops political bribery, ends secret money practices, and fixes broken elections.

“This is the tipping point for the anti-corruption movement in America,” RepresentUs Director and Co-founder Josh Silver says. “Congress is broken. They won’t fix the system that put them in power. However, we can all work together to root out the causes of our politics’ deep dysfunction. Now is the time for Americans from the right and left to unite and help unbreak our democracy.”

With “Unbreaking America,” RepresentUs aimed to create a viral moment that engaged 3.5% of all Americans -- 11 million people -- in an effort to educate and galvanize voters around fixing our broken political system.

As of August 2019, the video has been viewed over 7 million times in its original facebook post and over 15 million times on an episode of "NowThis Elections" shared on Facebook. It has surpassed 970,000 views on YouTube, 155,000 views on Twitter, and 17,000 views on Instagram; reaching over 22 million people across multiple platforms. The short film has been shared more than 400,000 times, retweeted more than 2,000 times, and 23% have watched the entire video to credits—an absolute anomaly for a roughly 12-minute video on the internet.
