MEDIA OUTLETS DECLARE BIDEN VICTORY
LEADING DEMOCRACY REFORM GROUP CONFIRMS 2020 ELECTION SAFE AND SECURE
Counting Continues Amidst Rampant Disinformation
November 5, 2020 (Florence, Massachusetts): As media outlets declare Joe Biden victorious, RepresentUs decried continued false assertions of widespread fraud, and urged the Trump campaign to respect the vote count.
“While President Trump has the right to ask for legal reviews of the election, there is no credible evidence of widespread fraud or irregularities that would impact the outcome,” said RepresentUs CEO Josh Silver. “Disinformation has been pushed by President Trump and his proxies, but the major news networks, including the Associated Press, CNN, and Fox News, have called the election for Biden based on the legitimate and verified vote count.”
“This election was conducted safely and securely, despite incredibly challenging circumstances. The disinformation and false declarations about voting is an attack on democracy itself. It is the stuff of authoritarians, not American presidents,” continued Silver.
Concerns still linger about the Trump campaign attempting to strongarm state lawmakers to send illegitimate electors to the Electoral College – a move that tens of thousands of RepresentUs members have spoken out opposing. Meanwhile, elections administrators across the country are still counting all legal votes, making sure the voices of Americans who participated in the election are heard. As the process continues, public interest advocates are urging they be allowed to complete their work, and certify the results as required by law.
Election Illustrates Need to Modernize Election Processes
“Elections experts on both sides of the aisle warned for months that this was an election that could ‘break America.’ We saw unfounded attacks on absentee ballots and vote-counting, as well as rampant disinformation about voter fraud. It was a close call, with shocking attempts to undermine our own elections from our own president,” continued Silver.
The American people chose more than just a President. Game-changing anti-corruption reforms won at the ballot box in Virginia, and communities in Minnesota, Oregon, California, and Colorado. Voters chose to root out the influence of political extremism and special interests by changing broken election and campaign laws that dissuade the best candidates from running for office and incentivize bad behavior that has subsumed governance.
“Americans turned out in record numbers during a pandemic to vote for candidates, and in cities and states to pass sweeping reforms to repair our failing political system. 2020 revealed a political system in a crisis that modernizes the process and puts more power in the hands of the people through ranked choice voting, anti-gerrymandering, open primaries, and campaign finance reforms in 2021,” said Silver.
“The incoming president must use the power of his office to restore standards of ethics and decorum, impose limitations on his own power, and reinstate checks and balances to the Presidency,” said Silver “If the last four years have taught us anything, it’s that we cannot take democracy for granted.”
“President-elect Biden has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to fix the corruption at the core of our democracy,” said Silver. “Powered by a grassroots movement, RepresentUs will push the president and our new Congress to act immediately to address America's corruption crisis – and keep winning state-by-state battles to unrig our political system.”
