President Trump just endorsed banning members of Congress from trading stocks, drawing bipartisan praise.
He’s right that this is a problem, and Americans across party lines agree: lawmakers should not be allowed to profit from the system they oversee.
Now Congress must pass a bill that actually fixes the problem. Proposals like the Stop Insider Trading Act – the bill the president endorsed – don’t actually ban stock trading and leave too many loopholes in place.
There’s a real solution: the Restore Trust in Congress Act.
This is a bipartisan bill that would:
✔ Ban Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from trading individual stocks
✔ Require newly elected members to divest before being sworn in
✔ Impose a 10% penalty (based on stock value) for noncompliance
