When political parties can lock out some voters or rig electoral maps, it’s the American people that lose.
The Supreme Court just issued a ruling in the case Louisiana v. Callais that guts a core protection of the landmark Voting Rights Act, stripping away decades of hard-won protections against racial discrimination in the design of electoral maps.
This is happening in a context where both major political parties have spent months scrambling to redraw voting maps to gain an advantage before the upcoming election. Whatever the reasons, everyday Americans will pay the price.
But there’s a straightforward solution to ending this anti-democratic race to the bottom.
Congress must act. We need federal reform to end gerrymandering nationwide. Regardless of political affiliation, Americans across the country need to press their representatives to fix this problem. They don’t need to unilaterally disarm. They need to make our elections fair, and ensure representatives are actually accountable to the people who vote in them.
