Right now, the president has deployed National Guard troops to Washington, DC, to fight alleged out of control crime – despite crime in the city lowering in the past 30 years and the homicide rate dropping 35% since 2023.
This is becoming a pattern: Earlier this year he deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles. In neither case was this aid requested by the mayor of DC or the governor of California, which is the standard process for requesting troops.
He has also used the power of the Home Acts Rule to take over the police in DC – something no other president has ever done.
Additionally, he’s threatening to deploy the National Guard in other cities, including New York City, Baltimore, Chicago and Oakland…again, without this aid being requested by the governors of those states.
And because these troops are being deployed without requests from state governors, they are under the control of the President, not the state.
