To My Elected Official,

I’m writing to respectfully ask that you vote in support of LD1610 / IB 1 "An Act To Prohibit Campaign Spending by Foreign Governments and Promote an Anticorruption Amendment to the United States Constitution."

As this is a Citizens Initiative, the 131st Legislature has the opportunity to pass the initiative outright or send it to the Nov. 2023 ballot. Given the widespread, bipartisan support for the effort, I ask that you act now and pass this initiative outright.

For far too long, the voices of Maine voters have been drowned out by foreign government interference and dark money special interest groups. With this initiative, Maine has the opportunity to stop corruption, protect the integrity of our elections, and to restore confidence in our democracy.

There are two key provisions in this initiative. First, it will ban foreign governments from spending money in Maine referendum elections (something I was surprised to learn is currently allowed!). Second, the initiative affirms Maine’s support for an anti-corruption amendment to the U.S. Constitution and charges the Maine Ethics Commission to report on the progress made by Maine’s delegation in Congress to advance this amendment. Such an amendment would allow for reasonable limits on money in our election.

Not surprisingly, there is broad support among Maine voters for both provisions.

89% of Maine voters support prohibiting foreign governments and foreign government-influenced entities from spending money to influence Maine elections, including 87% of Republicans, 90% of Democrats, and 90% of Independents.

73% of Maine voters support an anti-corruption amendment to the US Constitution, including 55% of Republicans, 87% of Democrats, and 62% of Independents.
