Tariffs should be decided by the people’s representatives. Not handed down like royal decrees.
The Constitution gives Congress, not the president, the power to impose taxes and control federal spending. That’s how our system of checks and balances is supposed to work.
But right now, any president, regardless of party, can impose sweeping tariffs with:
- No vote in Congress
- No public comment
- No economic analysis
- No accountability
That’s how Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Brazil to pressure them into dropping criminal charges against his political ally, former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. Or threatened tariffs on Mexico not for trade or economic reasons but to enforce his immigration agenda.
Tariffs like these can raise prices on cars, clothes, food, and other everyday essentials with no debate, no oversight, and no accountability. This isn’t how democracy works.
