Fierce public backlash led several Republicans in the Senate to stand up to the Trump administration’s corrupt $1.776 billion "Anti-Weaponization Fund." And this week, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche told the Senate they were scrapping the fund.
The slush fund–for now–is off the table, but the Justice Department is still planning to give Trump, his family, and his businesses immunity from IRS audits of any of their past tax returns. All as part of a supposed “settlement” with the IRS, an agency Trump controls, in a case that a federal judge is now examining as involving possible administration collusion and fraud against the court.
Every American is subject to IRS audits, but this deal places the president's family and businesses above the law. Former IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated that there is no precedent for the IRS to permanently stop examining a specific person's tax returns.1
By halting these audits, the settlement lets Trump off the hook for an estimated $100 million in back taxes and penalties.2
Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden is demanding a bipartisan investigation into the Treasury and Justice Departments' roles in this settlement.
