A US citizen, mother of a young child, shot and killed in an apparent homicide by an ICE agent. An undocumented immigrant from Mexico shot and killed by ICE in Illinois. An American citizen shot by ICE in Los Angeles. ICE detains 5-year-old boy coming home from Minnesota preschool.
And now, a 37-year-old American ICU nurse, surrounded by heavily armed DHS agents, pushed to the ground, and then apparently shot point-blank multiple times, in what’s hard to describe as anything other than an execution caught on video.
This is part of a dangerous and growing pattern of brutality and intimidation by immigration agents. Since President Trump launched his immigration crackdown, federal agents have opened fire at least 19 times and held bystanders or protesters at gunpoint in at least 36 incidents. Five people have been killed and eight more injured.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, ICE and Customs and Border Protection leadership, and the White House have minimized these events and the Department of Justice has refused to conduct full, independent investigations, or to fully cooperate with state criminal investigations. ICE now operates with a massive budget and less oversight than any other law enforcement agency in the country.
Congress is feeling the pressure. After significant public outcry DHS funding was only extended for the next two weeks. The extra $10 billion is still hanging in the balance. Your message can help add to the momentum to limit DHS funding with more oversight and constitutional boundaries.
Sign this petition now to demand that Congress:
- Directly investigate ICE’s and CBP’s use of force and the instructions coming from the top of DHS
- Push for independent, full criminal investigations of these cases
- Cut off ICE funding as long as the abuses continue
Regardless of where you stand on immigration, no agency should have essentially unlimited funding and zero accountability.
