The Department of Justice’s mission is clear:

Uphold the rule of law, keep our country safe, and protect civil rights.

Nowhere in that mission1 is anything about using the DOJ to settle a president’s personal scores or intimidate opponents.

In countries like Venezuela and Turkey, corrupt leaders weaponize law enforcement to silence critics and protect themselves. That’s exactly what we’re seeing right now with the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey who had previously investigated President Trump.

What Happened

A career prosecutor Trump had appointed resigned because he didn’t think there was enough evidence to indict Comey like Trump wanted. But instead of backing him up, Attorney General Pam Bondi replaced the prosecutor with a former member of Trump’s personal legal team, with no prosecution experience, who then issued the indictment right away2.

Congress Must Step In

Congress funds the Department of Justice and has a duty to provide oversight of it to ensure the law is applied fairly and not twisted into a tool for revenge or harassment. The presumption of innocence and due process belong to everyone, even people we can’t stand.

When law enforcement becomes a tool for revenge, harassment or intimidation, every American’s freedom is at risk.
