The debt ceiling is a self-imposed limit on what we can borrow to pay our bills. In the past, raising the debt ceiling has always been standard practice and has happened 78 times over the past 50 years.
But now, extremist politicians are using this crisis for their own partisan purposes. Those politicians are cynically flirting with default, putting us in danger of a recession and risking millions of people’s jobs in the process.
