In late June, the Senate used the filibuster to avoid even discussing the For the People Act — the groundbreaking democracy bill that would kick billionaires out of our elections, end gerrymandering, and defend the freedom to vote.
If the For the People Act doesn’t pass by August 16th, politicians will rig our voting districts for the next decade to ensure they remain in power regardless of what voters want. This is when the Census Bureau sends states the data they need to redraw voting maps.
This arcane Senate rule is poisoning our political system by allowing a single senator to block a massively popular voting rights bill from even getting a vote, simply by firing off a text message. The filibuster is not more important than saving our democracy, and Congress must do whatever is necessary to pass the For the People Act.
