Florence, Mass. – For the first time in America’s history, a president faces criminal charges. Former President Donald Trump is expected to be arraigned Tuesday in New York following a more-than-six year investigation into business fraud.
RepresentUs CEO Joshua Graham Lynn issued the following statement in response:
“In a healthy democracy, the case against President Trump would be about integrity, accountability and the rule of law. It would be met with the seriousness and gravity that an unprecedented event deserves. But because of our broken political system, neither of those things are happening. Instead, we’re seeing politicians cynically trying to capitalize on this news to rile up their base and attempt to score political victories. All that does is create more division.
“Despite all the noise, there’s still a lot we don’t know. Instead of jumping to conclusions based on partisan leanings, we should all take a deep breath, consider the facts as they come out, and let the justice system do its job. Like any American in this situation, President Trump should be afforded due process and presumed innocent until proven guilty.
“We’ll be keeping an eye on this case closely. But in the meantime, our work to root out corruption and strengthen democracy must continue.”
