WASHINGTON – The bipartisan January 6 Committee is expected to release its final report Thursday, wrapping up its investigation into the attack on the U.S. Capitol. In 18 months, the Committee interviewed more than 1,200 witnesses, collected more than 140,000 documents, and held ten televised public hearings. In its final business meeting Monday, the Committee issued criminal referrals for former President Donald Trump and others for their role in trying to overthrow the 2020 election.

According to the 800-page final report, former President Trump:

  • Privately acknowledged losing the 2020 election, but continued to lie and spread misinformation leading up to the January 6 attack.
  • Pursued several strategies to overturn the 2020 election, including pressuring former Vice President Mike Pence to reject Electoral College votes.
  • Pressured states to change the election outcome, including asking Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes.”
  • Summoned a mob to the U.S. Capitol, and repeatedly refused to call off the attack while it was unfolding.

The report also recommends a series of steps Congress could take to prevent another January 6, including passing the updated Electoral Count Act.

RepresentUs CEO Joshua Graham Lynn issued the following statement:

“As the Committee’s final report shows in chilling detail, the January 6 attack was no fluke. It was part of a nationwide scheme by power-hungry politicians to silence the will of the American people. Free and fair elections were ultimately upheld, but there’s no guarantee that will happen next time.

“Congress has the opportunity to give the American people the perfect holiday gift: passing the revised Electoral Count Act. Updating the 130-year-old law would be a massive first step toward protecting our elections and ensuring that voters, not partisans, pick the president. It would also show the American people that it’s possible for our elected officials to come together, put country over party, and deliver a significant bipartisan victory.

“We look forward to celebrating the gift of a stronger democracy before the end of the year.”
