WASHINGTON -- Members of Congress are currently set to go on break for the holidays on December 13, which means they have less than three weeks to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

RepresentUs CEO and Co-founder Josh Silver issued the following statement calling on lawmakers to pass both bills before it’s too late:

“For months, Americans across the country -- liberal and conservative -- have put it all on the line to pass the most consequential voting bill of our lifetimes: the Freedom to Vote Act. 70 percent of the country supports this bill. Veterans, faith leaders, and small business leaders in West Virginia came together to encourage Sen. Joe Manchin to work toward a commonsense solution and do what it takes to get it passed. And there have been countless protests and rallies, including in front of the White House, where patriotic Americans have risked arrest to protect democracy.

“Our elected leaders now have to decide whether they want to go on vacation or protect our country from the urgent anti-democratic threat it faces. President Biden should make this the priority issue he championed on the campaign trail. And Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should use their power to keep lawmakers working until the Freedom to Vote Act passes. It’s time to fix the filibuster, restore the Senate, and pass the Freedom to Vote Act to prevent our democracy from crumbling.”
